Falling in Love With the Process
One of the strongest conversations that happens throughout the whole episode is how to embrace the process rather than being focused on the end result, because if you only focus on the end result and you don’t come to love the process, you will never succeed.
Eric explains that there are no guarantees in Hollywood. Yes, you can work hard, and try and prepare for every opportunity, but you’ll never know what the final result will be, and that’s not specific to acting. It follows people into business as well. The only thing you truly control is the effort you put in every day.
Roselyn agrees: At some point, you will have to fall in love with the process itself. Otherwise, the struggles and difficulties of whatever you are trying to achieve will crush you. You have to remind yourself that’s not how long-term successful careers are built. It’s just about keep turning up even when progress is slow.
Building Something That Is True to You
Roselyn discussed about directing films and Eric talks about creating Palm Republic Rum.
They also discussed what it also means to stay true to yourself while building your career. If you’re building a business with your name on it, someone else, by definition, shouldn’t be telling you what your name means to you or using your name to do something that goes against your values, which can make things extremely difficult for you.
To feel connected to the work you’re doing, you’ll need to build something that’s true to who you are.
Surrounding Yourself With People Who Know What You Don’t
Another lesson is surrounding yourself with people who know what you don’t. Roselyn and Eric admitted they didn’t have all the answers either. Instead, they had to surround themselves with more experienced partners and learn from people in areas where they have no experience.
And this shows how entrepreneurship does not mean doing everything yourself. It’s also about knowing when to ask for help and building the right team around you.
Treating Rejection as a Learning Experience
Both guests in this episode have experienced rejection and failure, whether that was being rejected from an acting role, or not being sure whether starting a business idea would be a good idea.
They’ve always taken failure and being rejected to be a learning experience, and this attitude has provided them with the ability to continuously grow in industries where success wasn’t guaranteed.
